Complicated Tax Terms

Taxes

Taxes are a compulsory contribution to state revenue, taken by the government on workers' income and business profits, or added to the cost of some goods, services, and transactions. There are a few kinds of taxes.

However, as an F-1 Visa holder, you are not required to pay some of these taxes.

Tax Withholding

This is the amount of money held from your income by your employer to pay for taxes.

Tax Return

A tax return is the tax form or forms used to calculate your tax liability (how much tax you need to pay).

Sometimes, your employer deducts more than the amount you owe. You can claim back this amount from the IRS. These are your tax refunds.

The opposite can also happen, where your employer deducts less than the amount you owe. You will need to remit payments, paying the IRS this extra amount.
